Up for a challenge, fellow fans of the horror genre?
As the month of Halloween is upon us, so, too, is the time of year to revisit beloved horror films of the past, and experience exciting new discoveries of the present; however, determining which movies to watch can turn into quite the mind-numbing, out-of-control, time-consuming task.
Instead of waiting to be struck daily by an inspirational bolt of lightning as to what film to view, I’ve found it a fun exercise to first identify a specific theme and then create a watchlist of movies for the month of October. Past themes I’ve explored are 31 Years of Horror in 31 Days (2020), which placed the top-grossing horror film at the box office of each year in the spotlight, 31 Days of Horror Sequels (2022), and 31 Days of Deadly Celebrations (2023), featuring films whose setting of celebration takes an unexpectedly deadly turn.
For this year’s challenge, I’ve taken a more basic approach by compiling a list of essential horror movies presented in alphabetical order. Too easy, right? So, to elevate this exercise into “challenge” territory, I’ve thrown in a couple of plot twists:
- The title of each movie must consist of a single word (excluding the articles “the”, “a”, and “an”)
- The title of each movie must begin with a unique letter of the alphabet (i.e. movie #1 begins with the letter “A”, movie #2 with the letter “B”, etc. until you’ve reached the end of the alphabet)
Below is my personal list of Essential Horror in One Word – ABC’s Edition (Halloween Month Challenge). Just for fun, I’ve included the official and/or popular tagline for each film at the time of its release.
Either before or after reviewing my list, I challenge you to create your own; for most letters of the alphabet, there’s no shortage of horror movies consisting of one word! Once completed, don’t be shy, share your list with others. (And feel free to tag me, @scarlettoscara666, and @rabbitinredblog when you do!)
