10 Questions and Artworks with Shawn Mansfield
What’s your favorite scary movie?
Scream. I was born in 97 and was raised by the post-Scream horror wave. All the teen slashers featuring your favorite TV stars of the 90s are my bread and butter.
When did you start doing horror art?
Ever since I could draw as a child. I was obsessed with the Spawn comics and figures and was always drawing facehuggers in my notebooks in school. I used to love looking at all the cover art in the horror section of Blockbuster and was lucky enough to have chill parents that would let me pick out any movie! So, inspiration came early.
Favorite horror movie sequel?
Scream 2. the Scream franchise owns me so aside from that I also really love Cold Prey 2. It’s a wicked Norwegian slasher film that follows the Halloween 2 formula in more ways than one. It picks up immediately after the events of the first movie, not giving our final girl a second before being thrown back into it. Cold Prey 2 also ups the kills and gore, it surpasses the first for me but both are great to watch back to back!
Favorite horror movie character?
Sidney Prescott. She is why I love the Scream franchise. What makes that horror franchise different from all the others is it’s all about Sidney. You watch Friday for Jason, Nightmare for Freddy. Most Halloween movies people tuned in for Michael, they had to course correct egregiously killing Laurie because they undervalued the importance of an iconic final girl! Scream always knows your here for the amazing returning characters, not the ever-changing killer. And there are so many amazing characters, which is why I’m still SO amped for 6! Let’s be real, Sid desperately needs a break from Ghostface.
If you could bring one horror movie character back to life, who would it be?
Croaker Queen Helen Shivers!
What horror film series would you revive if you could?
I’m really disappointed we’re not at Ma 5 – Ma in Space yet. But there’s still time!
What film do you think deserves a sequel that never got one?
I’d give my right arm to get Luca Guadagnino’s planned but scrapped Suspiria Part 2 made. When Suspiria came out in 2018 I drove almost 3 hours to the closest theater playing it. I cried, it was worth it.
Favorite chase scene?
Gale Weathers’ in Scream 2 chase scene will never be topped. God, I feel her pain why don’t any of those damn doors have locks!?
Favorite kill scene?
The double murder scene in Dario Argento’s Tenebre really sticks out in my mind. The crane tracking camera, the bonkers Goblin score playing diegetically on the record player inside, it’s so beautiful. I’m also a sucker for Argento’s overuse of bright red fake blood.
What movie do you think is underrated?
Messiah of Evil (1973). I cannot recommend this movie enough. It feels like a bizarre fever dream taking place in the creepy sleepy seaside town of Point Dune. There are zombie phantom people playing supermarket sweep, Hitchcock movie dates gone wrong, and bloody eyes! I’ve been seeing its influence in a lot of horrors lately and wish it was talked about more because it’s a classic. It also features the greatest bedroom you will ever see in your life, it’s free on YouTube right now!
