Rabbit: What’s your favourite scary movie?

Plaparts: That is a difficult question as there are so many to pick from. I guess if I had to choose one, I would say John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, Halloween. I saw it as a kid and it deeply disturbed me at the time. I was borderline traumatized by The Shape and had recurring nightmares. The fear eventually subsided and evolved into an obsession with Michael Myers and the franchise as a whole. Even though none of the sequels or remakes quite live up to the original, I still find them entertaining and will re-watch them from time to time.

Rabbit: Who is your favourite horror movie character?

Plaparts: An obvious choice would be Michael Myers, given my favorite scary movie pick, and though he does have subtly implied character traits, he lacks a certain distinct personality. So, as for a character with a very distinct personality, I would go with Choptop from Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. He has such a whacky intense personality, a living cartoon character. Choptop personifies the tonal shift that the sequel takes with its colorful yet dark comedy elements (in contrast to the original more serious, gritty TCM). Bill Moseley’s Choptop makes an excellent addition to the Sawyer family.

Rabbit: When did you start doing horror art?

Plaparts: I don’t limit myself to horror-themed art, but I do find myself always coming back to it. I started drawing horror characters back when I was a kid. I was a big fan of Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man and Karloff’s Frankenstein and would draw them when I was young. I was always instinctively drawn to darker, pulpy subject matter and the classic Universal monsters fit comfortably within that category. There is something about those Golden Age horror characters that are so striking and iconic. They were deeply burnt into my young mind and they continue to haunt me to this day.

Rabbit: What’s your fav horror artwork you’ve completed to date?

Plaparts: I would probably go with the recent Wall of Masks piece I produced based on Jimmy Falco’s wonderful mask collection. Once I saw a picture of his collection I was overwhelmed, to say the least, so many Don Post’s in a single image. Each has its own distinct expression and aesthetic which was definitely a challenge to capture in a new medium (having recently taken up watercolour as my primary medium of illustrating after years of mostly using pen and ink). The illustration packs the punch of an old haunted house-style experience but distilled into one image. I foresee more mask illustrations in the future.

Rabbit: Any new release horror movies you’re looking forward to in 2020?  

Plaparts: I’m somewhat interested in seeing the continuation of the Halloween franchise with the upcoming Halloween Kills. Godzilla vs King Kong is also coming out this year. I’m looking forward to that as I grew up watching the original King Kong vs Godzilla and am a fan of the old kaiju genre of monster movies. Elijah Wood’s Come to Daddy is another one that comes to mind.
