12 films of the horror/thriller genre either arrived or remained in movie theaters in March, but one movie in particular absolutely crushed the competition, already racking up some killer box office after only two weeks in release. 2018’s highest grossing horror/thriller of the year, A QUIET PLACE, opened on April 6. Could 2019’s ultimate top grosser have arrived even earlier in the year? Only time will tell, but for now Jordan Peele’s US has set the bar VERY high for other films competing for the title of #1 horror/thriller of 2019.
US, was one of five new films to chart in March. The only other wide release was the thriller, GRETA, followed by horror film CLIMAX, and thrillers THE WEDDING GUEST and STYX, all three released in considerably fewer theaters than US and GRETA.
February horror holdovers HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U and THE PRODIGY, along with thrillers BIRDS OF PASSAGE and MISS BALA remained in theaters with varying degrees of success, while January releases ESCAPE ROOM and GLASS also added to their already impressive grosses.
