Rabbit: Congrats on wrapping up filming of St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve seen the buzz on social media and horror fans are really excited about the release! How did you come up with the concept for the film?

Jared Campbell: I’ve been collecting horror movies my entire life. Around 2009 there was this small VHS community on YouTube, which has since grown. I would post updates and reviews, but I quit posting content in 2012 after getting a job at a movie theatre. Within that two year span, I learned a lot about the genre and what people like to see. The theatre experience helped with this as well. From there, I started crafting the film and even got to the point of shooting footage for a concept trailer. Unfortunately, it didn’t go viral as I had hoped and the project was abandoned until I could get a proper budget and more experience with filmmaking.

Rabbit: There’s been a lot of successful horror films connected to holidays; Halloween, Black Christmas and April Fool’s Day to name a few. Were you inspired by any holiday horror films when making St. Patrick’s Day?

JC: All of them. Leprechaun, while associated with television airings during St. Patrick’s Day, didn’t really have anything to do with the holiday itself. You literally have a perfect formula in the palm of your hands. Underage drinking and inevitably bad decisions! Why it hasn’t been tackled before is a mystery, but one I hope will entertain.

Rabbit: A killer’s costume is a really important element in the slasher subgenre. It looks like the killer in St. Patrick’s Day wears a troll mask which is super creepy! How’d you land on this look?

JC: It was originally a welding helmet, but last year Random Acts of Violence was released and I felt it was necessary to replace it with something a little more unnerving. This also forced story changes as the welding helmet was relevant at the time. After browsing through eBay I came across what was listed as a 1970’s leprechaun mask. It had the perfect colors for it to be associated with the holiday. It was only after midway through filming my blindness realized it was based on the troll doll look, but it works wonders nonetheless!

Rabbit: The trailer is packed with suspense! Without giving too much away, what was your favourite scene to shoot?

JC: I’ve only done comedy films before tackling this one so I wanted to make sure the audience experienced pure, unrelenting terror. This is the literal definition of a scene that caused the entire crew to look away. It’s a death that takes place around the halfway mark and while it was the most fun any of us had on set, it most certainly left an impact.

Rabbit: When and where can we watch the film?

JC: With COVID-19 my options are limited, but I’m hoping to secure an outdoor screening within the next few months at Visart Video in Charlotte, NC. I’m also hoping to get accepted into The Mad Monster Party Film Festival in February. From there I’ll start submitting it to multiple festivals. Hopefully, they’ll want it, I’ll keep everyone posted! Fingers crossed for a streaming service! That would be a dream!
