A Q&A with David A. Flores
Hi David, thanks for joining us to discuss your upcoming horror film Pit Stop! How did you come up with the concept for the film?
Thank you for having me! PIT STOP is my 2nd film, coming off our festival award-winning 1st film, LIKENESS – available now on YouTube, please check it out!
The spark of PIT STOP really came down to wanting to keep the train going, get the band back together. That was especially true of our actresses – Emily Sweet and Mary Rose Branick. I worked with them before on separate projects and I really liked the idea of pairing these two powerhouse actresses together and seeing what we could make. I had been developing the world that PIT STOP inhabits for another project, so I reworked elements to make it the story and film it is now.
Our film is a moment-in-time of these two characters – a prisoner and a guard – stranded in the middle of nowhere, out of gas and realizing they’re not as alone as it would seem. All the projects I create are character-based stories with genre twists and PIT STOP is no exception.
Were you inspired by any other films or filmmakers during the creative process?
THE MONSTER, a fantastic little 2016 indie horror film, was a North Star for me, just in terms of setting a character-based story with two characters in a car. 2015’s GREEN ROOM was another inspiration, mainly in the punk rock tone and vibe that bleeds through that entire film. I knew I wanted to create a killer little bite-sized film. Something that is loud, in-your-face, but also masking some real vulnerability underneath. Finally, I kept JAWS close to my heart, just in that less is more. We lean in on that for this film and trust the audience to fill in the blanks for the things we do show.
What were some of the biggest challenges during the filmmaking process?
We shot it in a day, so that in itself was very hard, very ambitious. Thankfully, every person behind the scenes, from our actors, to our DP, the production crew, was at the top of their game. We 100% have a finished film because of our crew.
The teaser trailer ends with metal music, what can you tell us about the vibe of the film?
It’s metal, for sure. Our characters – the prisoner and the guard – are in constant tension, almost like they’re competing soloists, trying to one-up each other and prove who’s the biggest in the room. That vibe is the DNA of the film and it’s reflected in performances, the shooting, the editing, the music.
Our film is a moment-in-time of two characters – a prisoner and a guard – stranded in the middle of nowhere, realizing they’re not as alone as it would seem.
What are you hoping viewers will take away from Pit Stop?
That you can hop in and be ready to be taken on a rollercoaster ride. We’re a bite-sized film (under 6 minutes) that can go 0 to 60, while also being character-based and having quieter, meaningful moments. We hope you come out of it wanting more.
