A Q&A with writer and director James Grim
Thanks for joining us to discuss your upcoming Friday the 13th fan film My Special Boy! What was the inspiration behind this project?
I’ve always been a huge fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, mainly the first 5 films. I met Chad Sumner who plays Jason while scouting locations for a different film. I mentioned to him that I want to eventually try my hand at doing something Friday the 13th related. From there, Chad and I would spend countless hours talking about the films and the different iterations of the character of Jason. We knew from there that we needed to make this film.
What makes this Friday the 13th fan film stand out from all the others?
Since I am a fan of the first 5 films, I felt it was important to go back to the roots of the franchise. I definitely felt that going back to camp was the way to go, and none of the other fan films are doing that. Not only that, but a majority of the other fan films feature a zombie-like Jason. I wanted to feature a more human-like version of the character. Something that is more similar to the character in parts 3 and 4, and maybe even the reboot from 2009.
The trailer looks really intense and the shots of Jason are especially creepy! What characteristics of Jason from the franchise films are you aiming to hit on?
My favorite Jason has to be Ted White’s portrayal from The Final Chapter. With that being said, I gave Chad free reign on how he wanted to portray this version of the character. Chad is a big fan of Kane Hodder’s take on the character. So you’ll get a good mix of Ted White, Richard Brooker and Kane Hodder in the film.
What are your favorite Friday the 13th films and do you plan to reference them in My Special Boy?
The Final Chapter and Part 2 are my favorite films from the franchise. We do have some moments of sack head Jason which look great! Originally this was going to be sack head Jason heavy but ultimately we made a shift in the other direction. I do however have an idea for a prequel that would feature only sack head Jason. If people watch this film and want to see more of this universe we’ve created, I’d imagine that could become a reality at some point.
The film is being produced by Thom Mathews who plays Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. How did he become involved in the project?
Last year we made a proof of concept trailer. It was created to give people an idea of what kind of story we were looking to tell. Thom had seen it and was really intrigued by it. He went on to help back the project and purchased a producer perk we were offering. It’s a great feeling when someone you looked up to growing up, wants to help make your vision a reality.
Tell us about the Indiegogo campaign for the film. What are some of the perks and how can fans get involved with the making of My Special Boy?
We are currently offering a variety of different perks which include, blu-rays, VHS tapes and a motion picture soundtrack which will be composed by award-winning composer, Frank Dormani. We are also offering our newest poster which was created by Creepy Duck Design. He’s done work for Paramount Pictures, Amazon Prime and others. We’re also offering signed posters from the cast and crew. Those posters also include Thom’s signature as well. All backers receive a thank you at the end of the film and on IMDb. All producer credits receive a credit at the beginning and end of the film as well as on IMDb.
