We’ve all heard the saying that “it takes two to tango.” Well, evidently it sometimes also takes two to defeat a homicidal killer. While we all love and root for the final girl in horror, we shouldn’t forget some of the iconic duos that have teamed up to fight evil either. Whether they be a couple, friends or family, these pairs have all kicked some serious ass, and their relationships are endearing to fans of the genre.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s no better time for celebrating these dynamic duos of horror!
1/ Beverly Marsh and Bill Denbrough
Film: IT (2017)
Best Moment: At the end of IT, Bill musters the courage to kiss Beverly and she gladly reciprocates.
Why We Love Them: They both share vulnerability and loss. Bill is dealing with the grief and guilt over his brother Andy’s disappearance, and Beverly must live with a sexually abusive father. Teaming up to battle Pennywise proves these two are strong as a pair.
2/ Lorraine and Ed Warren
Films: The Conjuring (2013), The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Best Moment: Ed serenading Lorraine (and us) with his rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.
Why We Love Them: The two married demonologists not only have great on-screen chemistry, but their characters are based on a real-life couple.
3/ Laurie Strode and Dr Loomis
Films: Halloween (1978), Halloween 2 (1981)
Best Moment: At the finale of Halloween 2 when Laurie and Dr Loomis work as a team, tricking and trapping Michael Myers as they fill an operating theater with ether and oxygen gases. Loomis makes sure Laurie gets to safety before blowing the room up with Michael inside.
Why We Love Them: Dr Loomis is overly aware of the evils in life, whereas young Laurie is the picture of innocence. Without Michael, these two would never co-exist, but ultimately Loomis proves he’d go out of his way to protect Laurie, even if it means taking his own life.
4/ Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley
Films: Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011)
Best Moment: After being at odds for most of Scream 2, Dewey and Gale finally decide to work together by reviewing old tapes for clues on campus. They end up making up, and almost making love before Ghostface interrupts.
Why We Love Them: We get to experience the rollercoaster ride of Dewey and Gale through four films; from their initial flirtation to separation, proposal and the struggles they face from ten years of marriage. They were even married in real life after meeting on the set of Scream!
5/ Ginger Fitzgerald and Brigitte Fitzgerald
Films: Ginger Snaps (2000), Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2004), Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)
Best Moment: When Ginger and Brigitte make a pact in their bedroom to be together forever.
Why We Love Them: Even though Brigitte’s life was in danger, she still went out of her way to find a cure and try to transform her sister back to her normal state.
6/ Julie James and Ray Bronson
Films: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)
Best Moment: Their final showdown with Ben Willis on his boat at the end of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Why We Love Them: Ray isn’t afraid to show how much he loves Julie. He’d jump onto a boat in the middle of a hurricane for her. She repays the life-saving favor a time or two herself!
7/ Max Cartwright and Amanda Cartwright
Film: The Final Girls
Best Moment: Max and Amanda’s duet to Bette Davis Eyes on the ride home from Amanda’s audition.
Why We Love Them: We’ve never seen a storyline quite like theirs before in horror. While grieving her mother, a famous Scream Queen from the 80s, Max is pulled into an alternate reality – the setting of her mom’s most famous movie, Camp Bloodbath. We love watching the mother/daughter duo reunite to fight off the killer.
