As awards season continues, studios are being very careful not to release movies that may get passed over by audiences easily distracted at this time of the year by red carpet-bound Oscar contenders.

But for the first (and only) two wide releases of 2019 in both the thriller and horror genres, Escape Room, and Glass, respectively, the timing couldn’t be any better, as supported below by this past (U.S. long) weekend’s (January 18-21) North American box office body count of horror and thriller films, and their ranking within the Top 50.

And as an ADDED BONUS, I’ve included a sneak peak of what wide releases North American audiences can look forward to as we head into the dead-of-winter-month of February. Will the winning streak for horror and thrillers continue into the second month of 2019, or will they die a quick and sudden death at the box office? What fate do you predict for each?

Glass (#1)

Total North American Gross: $47 million

Total Overseas Gross: $48.5 million

Total Worldwide Gross: $95.5 million

Production Budget: $20 million

Judgment Day: M. Night Shyamalan’s follow-up thriller to Split (2017) and the final installment of the Unbreakable (2000) trilogy is already an impressive hit in its first weekend, more than doubling its budget at the North American box office, and more than quadrupling it when the overseas numbers are included. This Glass may not be breaking any box office records, but not breaking even is something it won’t have to worry about either.

Weekend Gross: $6.75 million

Compared to Last Week: -24.4%

Total Domestic Gross: $42.18 million

Total Foreign Gross: $13 million

Total Worldwide Gross: $55.18 million

Production Budget: $9 million

Judgment Day: 2019’s first widely released horror film is also the year’s first bona fide hit of the genre, already amassing almost six times more at the worldwide box office than the movie’s production cost. This is one room that audiences haven’t been looking to escape from this month.
