After a lackluster winter and spring at the box office, horror movies fought back with a vengeance throughout the 2024 North American summer movie season, which officially started May 3 and concluded at the end of this past (September 2) Labor Day weekend. And when compared to the same period of time in 2023, this past summer confirmed a welcome return from the dead for the horror genre, with the worldwide gross of the top two performers each exceeding $250 million, a milestone not achieved by any of last year’s summer releases.
Both established franchises and original features won over audiences (and in most cases, the critics, too), serving double duty by satisfying the summer appetites of fans, and whetting their appetites for horror’s friendliest season, the fall.
