The Shape has vanished. Two years have passed since Michael Myers’ brutal rampage throughout the once-peaceful town of Haddonfield, affecting the lives of many. The town of Haddonfield tries its best to move past that fateful night in 2018, but they should know better. Evil is always near.
A Q&A with director James Grim
Hi James, thank you for joining us to discuss your upcoming feature-length fan film Halloween Aftermath! Tell us how the story for this sequel came together.
Back toward the end of 2021 when we were finishing up MY SPECIAL BOY, Cole, who was only our editor at the time, came to me with an interesting pitch for a Halloween film. Now, granted, that initial pitch isn’t the same story. But a lot of the ideas remain. It is set between Kills and Ends and acts as a sort of Rogue One-like story to Halloween.
Why did you take the route of making a middle chapter between Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends instead of working on a separate story?
We just love that trilogy and take on the series. We felt we’d be able to maximize our potential by remaining in that world/timeline.
The film focuses on the character of Cole Dalton played by Ryan Jaske. The Halloween franchise has always had female leads, why did you go with a male as the main character?
Because it’s fresh and new. Sure, Corey was sort of a final guy but in the end, he became the villain. With our film, we’re going the traditional hero route with our protagonist and it’s just an interesting fresh perspective for horror in general.
Are there any characters in the film that are connected to past characters or storylines?
Yes! Lochlan Tramer is the paternal grandson of Ben Tramer, the famous crush of Laurie Strode. As well as Kyle Mulaney who’s the younger family member of the Mulaney family.
Tell us about The Shape in Halloween Aftermath. What characteristics are you aiming to capture with his portrayal in this film?
In the 2018 sequence, he’s beaten, limping and hurt. I know some people may dislike that but we’re sticking to the rules David Gordon Green & Co. established. But when we jump forward 2 years into 2020, he’s nasty, brutal and very angry at the folks who ran him out of town essentially.
I know some people may dislike that but we’re sticking to the rules David Gordon Green & Co. established.
What will be your biggest challenge during the filmmaking process?
Keeping a consistent tone. Underneath the hood of it being a Halloween movie, we’re trying to tell a deep, thought-provoking character study on someone with a sense of survivor’s guilt and somewhat of a romance story with his lifelong friend Abby. But when The Shape comes around things go very wrong for everyone.
What are your goals for the Indiegogo campaign and what perks can horror fans receive for supporting Halloween Aftermath?
Our goal is $7,500. We’ve already hit our 35% goal after one week. Fans can get all sorts of perks by supporting us from physical media (Blu-Ray & 4K Limited Editions), props from the movie, appearing in the film via missing person billboards (CGI) and missing posters. They can also grab Producer Perks. Test screening access to see the film in various stages of development and provide key feedback to Cole and myself. There are so many. Please check out the campaign and consider supporting!
