Film Review
Summary
Get up. Live your day. Get killed. Again.
Happy Death Day is like Scream meets Freaky Friday meets Halloween meets The Final Girls meets House Bunny meets Groundhog Day meets Mean Girls meets Sixteen Candles…and it totally works! The story follows Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), a college student who wakes up on her birthday in another student’s bed (Israel Broussard). Her day starts off fairly normal until she’s murdered by a creepy baby-masked killer. She then has to relive the same day over and over until she finds out who killed her. Although I mention many film references in Happy Death Day, it still felt fresh. At times maybe a bit repetitive, but the movie is built around a mystery and looking back to retrieve the necessary clues. Tree makes for a fun final girl and there’s great chemistry between her and Carter’s character. You’ll find yourself rooting for them throughout (and hoping Carter isn’t the killer). Another plus is how creepy the killer’s mask is. Surely it made its way into costume stores this year!
