With one month down and eleven to go, the race at the box office to see which horror/thriller movie will be 2019’s HALLOWEEN, A QUIET PLACE, or THE MEG was off to a healthy start in January. Of course, there were some casualties, too. After all, not everyone can be “Final Girl”.
GLASS took the top spot not only for the genre, but also of ALL films thus far released in 2019. And that distinction applies to both the North American and Worldwide box offices. While the thriller’s overall ranking will most certainly shift as the year progresses, GLASS has pretty much already guaranteed itself a spot in the Box Office Champs of 2019 Top 10 for the horror/thriller genre, and is possibly a Top 5 contender when it comes to the Worldwide box office. For the weekend of Feb 1-3, 2019, GLASS remained at #1, its resting place for all three weeks since being released.
ESCAPE ROOM’s performance at the box office in January was equally impressive. Horror’s first wide release of 2019 was January’s overall #3 flick at both the North American and Worldwide box offices, and like, GLASS, the movie continues to do well in the first weekend of February, where after five weeks of release it remains in the Top 10 at #9.
Alas, not all horror/thriller movies released in January enjoyed the same success as GLASS or ESCAPE ROOM. Where there is life there is also death, even at the box office. And in a world of “kill or be killed”, both REPLICAS and SERENITY died pretty quick deaths, at least (so far) with North American audiences. Out of respect for those involved, the less said the better, but all of the gory box office details can be found below.
And as an ADDED BONUS, I’ve UPDATED my sneak peak of what releases North American audiences can expect in the months of February AND March. Which movies are you most looking forward to seeing?
